Front Terminal Battery

Every terminal on the aisle side: the cabinet format that made 48V strings serviceable.

A front terminal battery is a 12V VRLA block whose terminals sit on the front face rather than the top. The reason is the cabinet: telecom backup strings live four-blocks-high in 19-inch or ETSI cabinets, and a top-terminal block in the middle of such a string cannot be reached, torqued or replaced without dismantling its neighbours. Front access turns string maintenance into an aisle job — test, torque and swap from the front, in minutes.

A note on evidence, stated plainly: no front-terminal model is separately documented in XD Battery’s product archive — the documented telecom series is ranged on the telecom page — so this page is a selection guide for the format, not a product listing. In practice, front-terminal specification is a string conversation: four blocks make the 48V string, the cabinet’s depth and shelf loading bound the block size, and the autonomy target at the site’s real load picks the capacity tier. Send those three facts — load, autonomy, cabinet — and the team will confirm which documented models fit the string and what connectors and hardware the configuration requires.

Front terminal versus standard blocks

Are front terminal batteries a different chemistry?

No — they are VRLA (AGM-type) blocks in a different case geometry. The format is mechanical; the electrochemistry is the standby discipline.

Can I retrofit front-terminal blocks into an existing cabinet?

Usually yes if shelf dimensions and loading accept the block footprint. Give us the cabinet make and shelf depth and we will confirm the fit.
